The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to approve Indiana’s request to handle permitting and enforcement of federal coal ash requirements. IDEM, an agency historically understaffed and underfunded, would oversee it. This program must be no more stringent than the federal rule, which is currently strong thanks to our collective advocacy; however, the administration is proposing to dismantle it and roll back protections for communities like Michigan City, risking more environmental disasters like the one in the Town of Pines. Mirroring the federal rule leaves us vulnerable. Hoosiers, with more coal ash than any state, deserve lasting protections for health and the environment.
Join the virtual public hearing on November 12th to tell IDEM and EPA to protect our communities from coal ash polluters. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/jtnwi/event/1078776/.
