The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has published a draft modification to Google's Building 2 air permit for its facility under construction at 402 Royal Road in Michigan City.
The permit would add 66 more large diesel backup generators, on top of the 66 already permitted for Building 1. If finalized, the campus could run 132 critical diesel engines, ~725,000 gallons of on-site diesel, and even bigger engines than Building 1, with ZERO modern pollution controls in this draft.
Krueger Middle School and Paladin - Head Start are each about a third of a mile from the site's property line, and residences are nearby. The site is a contaminated brownfield under active IDEM oversight. Michigan City residents have shown up to speak out against Building 1, packed Council chambers, and demanded accountability for the past year, while local permits for Building 2 may still be pending. This state permit will determine whether Indiana allows a second diesel power plant next to our schools and homes without basic safeguards.
Michigan City deserves clean air! Join the virtual public hearing on November 17th to tell IDEM to protect our communities and airways from Amazon’s dirty diesel generator permit. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/jtnwi/event/1067993/.
